iPhone Apps for Back to School

A notepad. A calendar. A good dictionary. A graphing calculator. Lots of books. An encyclopedia. Flashcards.

All supplies that kids need for school, right? That would take up a lot of space in a backpack, but luckily there’s an app for that. Your kids likely have an iPod… maybe even an iPhone. Take full advantage of it by loading it with a handful of apps geared towards students.

A notepad.

Simplenote Sometimes you just have to jot down a few notes on the fly. Simplenote let you do this, and then automatically synchronizes with your computer and other devices. You can add tags to make the notes easy to search, and even share them with others. FREE

A calendar.

Cozi Family Organizer iCal is great and all, but sometimes you have to keep the rest of your family in mind, especially when it comes to mom driving you here and there. The Cozi iPhone app allows you to ffortlessly manage your family calendar, shopping lists, and to do lists, and keep your family journal updated with special moments and photos. $1.99

A good dictionary.

Wordbook English Dictionary and Thesaurus Having a good dictionary is essential when it comes to all the reading and writing your kids do in school. This particular app has 150,000 entries, a built-in Thesaurus, Web links and even spoken pronunciations. And it’s fast! $1.99

A graphing calculator.

PI83 Graphing Calculator I remember my mom stressing over having to buy me a $90 calculator my freshman year of high school. The PI83 Graphing Calculator app is designed to replace the TI83 graphing calculator, and with over 100 different math functions, it does a good job of that, making expensive and bulky graphing calculators a thing of the past! $0.99

Lots of books.

Stanza This was one of the first apps I downloaded to my iPod touch. Having over 50,000 books available at your fingertips… for free! How exciting is that? You’ll find all the classics that are on your kid’s school reading lists, and can buy popular new books as well. FREE

An encyclopedia.

Wikipanion You can find just about anything by browsing Wikipedia. Wikipanion provides a dedicated search box for this purpose. I like the bookmarking feature that lets you bookmark entire pages, as well as individual sections. Images can be saved quickly and easily to the Photo library for future reference FREE

Flashcards.

iFlipr Create your own flashcards and carry them with you everywhere! Importing your notes is easy – just copy and paste from a spreadsheet. Then add pictures and sounds, edit fonts and font-sizes, highlight, and make lists in a WYSIWYG editor. $4.99

It may not be something you want to encourage your kids to buy, but did you know that CliffsNotes are now available on the iPhone as well? $1.99 each. (I probably bought WAY too many of those in high school!)

What apps are on your back-to-school supply list?

#dbest online rewards programs

A few weeks ago I shared a few of #dbest survey sites, but I realize that some people don’t have time to sit at the computer for hours on end, filling out survey after survey. There are other ways to make money on the ‘Net, doing things that you already do on a regular basis.

GET PAID TO SEARCH THE WEB

Swagbucks is one of the most popular rewards sites, mostly because it’s so easy to use. You earn ‘virtual currency’ simply by searching the web. The Swag Bucks can then be redeemed for  exclusive merchandise, gift cards, even cash through PayPal. You can earn more rewards by shopping through their site, taking polls and surveys, and completing special offers.

GET PAID FOR READING EMAILS

I’ve been a member of MyPoints for years, and have received many valuable gift cards for my efforts. The site sends you several emails a day. Click on the email and you receive 5 points. You’ll need a few thousand points to qualify for a gift card. You can get additional points by completing surveys, shopping through their links, and completing their offers. InboxDollars and SendEarnings are two other programs with similar rewards – except that you earn cash instead of points!
GET PAID FOR VIEWING ADS

Sign up for a free account and fill out your MeFile with your personal information. Visit the YouDate website often to look at new ads, or to make it easier, download the viewer to your desktop. You get paid a few cents to view an ad, and more if you click over to the company’s website. Your earnings are deposited automatically into your PayPal account every week, no minimum amount required!
GET PAID TO SHARE YOUR ‘LIKES’ ON FACEBOOK

MyLikes is a word-of-mouth advertising platform that ‘influencers’ on the web to create endorsements for products and services they like, some of which are sponsored. Those sponsored likes will garner pay per clicks. I like MyLikes because you can choose exactly what product you’d like to endorse, and write your “like” in your own words. Besides Facebook, you can broadcast your likes on Twitter and your blog.
GET PAID TO TWEET Sponsored Tweets

Sponsored Tweets is an online marketplace that connects tweeters with advertisers, with the purpose of engaging in sponsored conversations through Twitter. Tweeters are then compensated with cash. You just have to register, set your price, then begin to accept/reject offers. You can cashout once you reach $50.
GET CASH BACK ON YOUR PURCHASES Upromise

Upromise is a free college savings service that helps parents and students make it a little easier to pay for college by turning everyday spending into savings. Simply begin your online purchases at Upromise.com, apply for a Upromise credit card, or connect your grocery store loyalty cards to the program. Even your extended family and friends can contribute by signing up their credit cards with your account. There are other sites that give you cash back on your purchases – including Big CrumbsEBatesMr. Rebates, and ShopAtHome.com – so you may want to shop around to see which one offers you the best deal!

Do you use any of those services mentioned above? What’s your favorite?

#dbest last minute business cards

So you’re in town for a conference and you realize you never ordered business cards. Or you received them and they’re all wrong. Or your dog ate them.

Whatever the case may be, you need some kind of card with your name, company/blog name, and basic contact info. What can you do in less than 24 hours? You have several options.

Print cards on your home printer.
If you’re still at home, and have a printer, buying a kit may be your best bet. Avery sells business cards in a variety of finishes, for both laser and inkjet printers. The non-perforated cards separate easily, and leave you with a clean edge, which looks professional. You can design and print your cards directly from the website, or use the built-in Avery Wizard for Microsoft Office.

Order from Staples.com.
Cards are available for same day pickup in store, or they can be delivered to your door. Choose a stock logo, upload your own, and design the card with one of thousands of templates.

Order from Overnight Prints.
Affordable cards, with overnight printing available. Just order by 8pm EST and make sure to select the proper shipping when you check out.

Visit a local print shop.
If you happen to be in New York City for BlogHer, Influence Graphics can create your business cards overnight, or even the same day. Plus, it’s nearby on West 45th Street.

Good luck getting your last-minute business cards!

#dbest juicers

I’ve been on a fresh fruit and vegetable kick lately and am feeling great. I’ve been wanting to try making a super-healthy green juice, though… the only thing I’m missing is a good juicer! You can only do so much with a blender. I’ve been doing some research on the best juicers out there, and these are my findings. But first, this is what I’m looking for in a juicer.

My ideal juicer needs to be:

  • Easy to use. A wide chute is a must, so that I don’t have to chop up produce into little pieces.
  • Easy to clean. Preferably not too many parts, and those it does have need to be easy to clean, dishwasher-safe even!
  • Efficient. It needs to squeeze every drop of juice out of the fruits and vegetables I put in it, and do so in a timely manner.
  • Durable. I’ll probably be using it every day, so I’ll need one that’ll last, with a good motor and a sharp blade.
  • A good size. Compact enough to not take up too much space on my counter, yet big enough to make a big batch of juice in one use.
  • Affordable. I realize that a juicer is an investment in my health, but I still can’t afford to spend $300-400 on a kitchen appliance at the moment! Ideally, I’d like to buy a juicer that costs under $100, but I’m willing to go up to $150 for the right machine.
Product Description Price/Ratings Reviews
Breville Compact Juice Fountain

This has a patented 3 inch centered feed tube which juices whole fruit without cutting. The easy clean central pulp container juices 1.5 quarts before it needs to be emptied. With a 750 watt motor it has a heavy duty performance, and it also has a unique Cyclonic Juicing System which operates at 14,000 RPM to maximize extraction. $99.99

“I didn’t think a juicer would make me this happy… well, Breville did. I know why it’s rated the best juicer :) ” – @prettyness on Twitter
Jack LaLanne Power Juicer Pro

Lalanne has redesigned its best selling juicer with a new, sleek stainless steel finish and some great new features, such as a non-drip spout and stainless steel mesh filter. A high performance motor with special extraction technology delivers a powerful 3,600 RPM juicing punch. $149.95

3.5 stars

31 reviews on Amazon

“You can’t even begin to compare store bought juice {even organic} to juicing your own. You know exactly what goes in it. It’s the epitome of fresh… here’s a tip though–clean the machine right after you make juice. I mean RIGHT AFTER. If you do that, then the machine is easy to clean. You can pretty much rinse it, but…if you wait…you will be sorry LOL.” – Jolly Mom
Juiceman Pro

With 1000 watts of power, 3 speeds, and an extra-large feed chute, you’ll have everything you need to start juicing up your favorite fruits and vegetables with ease. The durable, stainless steel design looks great on any counter and full digital control makes juicing easier than ever. $133

3.5 stars

19 reviews on Amazon

“The highly rated Juiceman Pro JM503 squeezed up to a quarter cup more apple, orange, carrot, and tomato juice than most other juicers and… costs less than pricier models.” – Consumer Reports’ Home & Garden Blog
Omega Masticating Juicer

A masticating-style juice extractor that uses a low speed of 80 RPMs, which results in minimal heat build-up and oxidation promoting healthy enzymes and longer lasting juices. It doesn’t clog, foam or build up hear, for the most nutritious drinks you’ll make for your family. $255

4.5 stars

75 reviews on Amazon

“The Omega… is one of the best masticating juicers out there, and if you want to judge a juicer by its cover I would say that for a masticating juicer [it] would win the category.” – Juices 101
Waring Health Juice Extractor

Powerful, simple to operate, durable commercial quality construction, and a great warranty back up this juicer. The extra wide feed tube and simple canister type juice collector, in conjunction with a simple on/off power switch make this pretty goof-proof. $53.49

4 stars

154 reviews on Amazon

“My sister-in-law… found this Waring Pro juicer at Target and bought it for me for Christmas. It has worked beautifully! While the greatest downside to juicers is usually the cleanup, this one is a breeze in my opinion… it usually takes me about 3-5 minutes to take it apart and clean it all up from start to finish. Totally worth it if you ask me! – Chia Seed Me

#dbest survey sites

I’ve been a stay-at-home mom for almost 6 years now. Like many in my position, I try to contribute to our household income in any way I can. I’ve tried it all – taking care of children in my home, tutoring, selling on eBay, and most recently, writing. If you have time to spare, taking online surveys is another option. There are a ton of paid survey sites out there, so taking some time to weed through the bad ones is a must. SurveyPolice.com allows you to identify the scams and read reviews from real users.

My advice:

  • Set up an email account just for surveys.
  • Never pay to join a survey site! This means it’s a scam.
  • Set aside time every week to dedicate to taking surveys.
  • Focus on the longer ones first, because they generally pay the most.
  • Your time is valuable; think about whether that 50 cent survey is really worth it!
  • Avoid those sites that offer you “the chance” to win a prize for taking a survey. You have no idea how many hundreds (or even thousands) of people are participating, so the odds may not be very good.

7 reputable survey sites

American Consumer Opinion Panel
www.acop.com
Available worldwide in several different languages, surveys usually take 10 minutes or less to complete. A screener, a short survey, will get you entered into a sweepstakes, while a longer survey pays cash. As little as $2 and up to $50 per survey, with occasional focus group invitations. During my time as a member of ACOP, I never qualified for one of these focus group, but I imagine they pay much more than surveys would.
CVS Advisor
www.cvsadvisor.com
If you shop at CVS often, then this is the site for you! CVS values their customers’ input. They send out on-line surveys about their stores, products, and services, to get suggestions on how to improve CVS. In exchange for taking short surveys, you’re rewarded with Extra Care Bucks. Survey invitations only come a few times a year, but every little bit counts, right?
E-Poll
www.epollsurveys.com
Earn points for taking surveys! You can exchange your points for cash, deposited into your PayPal account, or request a gift card instead, from a selection of popular retailers including Amazon.com, Best Buy, Home Depot, iTunes, Starbucks, Target, and more.
Opinion Outpost
www.opinionoutpost.com
From my research, it looks like this is one of the top paid survey sites because members receive many, many survey opportunities each month, making it easy to accumulate points. 10 Opinion Points = $1.00, and you can also get points for inviting friends to join. You can cash out for as little as $5 and Opinion Outpost will mail you a check.
Opinion Place
www.opinionplace.com
I’ve been a member of this survey site for years. Owned by AOL, Opinion Place rewards you for taking 10-30 minute surveys. You can choose between Amazon.com gift cards, PayPal credits, AAdvantage miles, an entry into a monthly sweepstakes, or have the money added to the credit card you provided AOL, if you’re a member. You’re told in advance how long the survey is and what the reward will be, which I appreciate.
PineCone Research
pineconeresearch.com
This site is a little tricky because you can’t just apply at any time. PineCone occasionally posts banner ads on a variety of websites inviting new members to apply. If you’re lucky enough to find one of these links, then you’re usually in! You get paid between $3-5 for completing surveys, and will sometimes be sent a product to evaluate, and will be compensated for surveys taken regarding that product. It’s a very reputable company; I would receive a check in the mail just two or three days after I took the online survey.
Survey Savvy
www.surveysavvy.com

I seldom got invitations from this survey site, but when I did, I was paid in cash and could request a check at any time. The key to Survey Savvy is its referral network. You may not qualify for many surveys, but you’ll get cash when the friends and family you have referred complete theirs.

What are your favorite survey sites? Did I miss any good ones?

If you’re looking to buy an e-reader, the Kindle is the best of its kind. At 10.2 ounces, it’s lighter than a typical paperback and as thin as most magazines. New books can be downloaded in less than 60 seconds! The best part? No monthly wireless bills or commitments. $259 “I love my Kindle. the ultimate gadget!

iPad

Apple calls this “a magically and revolutionary product” and I have to agree. It’s an amazing way to experience the web, email, photos, and video, all with just the touch of a finger. Small enough to carry in my purse, it’s very portable and the battery is long-lasting. There are thousands of apps made just for iPad, and you can also run the almost 200,000 iPhone apps, with more coming every day. $499 “Yes, it may look like a big iPhone or iPod touch, but it’s so much more than that. Hard to describe, really. Should you buy an iPad? It depends on what you’re looking for… if you want an eReader, get a Kindle. If you want a portable computer, buy a netbook or a laptop. If you want something that can do a little bit of everything, buy an iPad. It’s in a category all its own.” – Riding With Ho Hands (my blog)

Go read the rest of my review of the iPad and enter to win one over at One Savvy Mom. Giveaway ends 6/25.

I would have added the new iPhone 4 to the list, available for pre-order today, but it looks like AT&T may not have been prepared for SO many orders! It does look very cool, though – maybe just wait a couple of days before placing your order. What are you getting your dad/husband/grandpa for Father’s Day?

#dbest smartphones

Now that AT&T has announced that they’ll be discontinuing their unlimited data plans, are you thinking of switching to another carrier? I believe that all providers will ultimately take this route, but I’m sure some customers will still take their business elsewhere once their contracts are up with AT&T.

Well… technically you could keep your unlimited data privileges if you stay with AT&T and never change your plan, but that means you’re tied to AT&T indefinitely. And I don’t like that. That’s why I’m a loyal Virgin Mobile customer. No contract!

Below are 4 other mobile carriers (Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and Virgin Mobile) and their top smartphones.

Product Description Price Reviews
Sprint
HTC EVO 4G
Sprint.com
A very advanced smartphone with top-of-the-line hardware and capable of 4G data transfer speeds, which is about 10 times faster than current 3G speeds, the HTC EVO 4G runs on the Android 2.1 platform and has a custom Web browser designed for the 4.3-inch touchscreen. Other features include simultaneous voice and data capability in 4G or Wi-Fi coverage areas for Web surfing; Google Goggles, which provides the ability to search anything from books and DVDs to barcodes and logos using pictures instead of words; a 1-GHz processor; and two cameras — an 8.0MP camera with HD video capability and a forward-facing 1.3MP camera. $199.99 with a
2-year contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate
“Expensive as it may be, scarce its high-speed network of choice and ambiguous in its upgrade timetable, it’s still one of the most capable and impressive handsets not only running Android but in the US smartphone segment altogether… as chicken and egg devices go, there are plenty of positives to enjoy while you wait for the network to catch up.” – SlashGear

T-Mobile
myTouch 3G Slide
mytouch.t-mobile.com
Available in black, white or red, and featuring Android 2.1, this phone sports a 3.4″ touch-screen WVGA screen, a virtual keyboard as well as the eponymous slide-out QWERTY pad, and 8GB of pre-installed MicroSD memory. It features a Faves Gallery, a dedicated app to manage 20 of your most common contacts; myModes, which allows you to change your theme using time-based cues; and a Genius Button, an enhanced voice command tool that can read back text messages, take dictation, search the web, and make calls. $179.99 with a
2-year contract, $200 instant online discount, and $50 mail-in rebate
“… As soon as we pulled the Slide out of its well-crafted box, we knew that there was something interesting about this device. If not downright special. And the more we used it, all of that came true. From the physical body, to the software that powers it… it is a very, very strong addition to the myTouch family. If you’re in the market for an Android-based handset with a physical keyboard, we can honestly say that the Slide is one that you should give some serious thought to.”
- Android Community

Verizon
LG Ally
verizonwireless.com
Talking or texting, touching or typing, uploading or downloading, this multi–talented superphone does it all—and does it with style. Outside you have an ergonomic silver–and–black case, tempered glass touchscreen, microSD slot, and touchscreen–qwerty keyboard combo; underneath, the Ally gives you the ability to customize home screens, and switch from surfing the web and emailing to text messaging and updating your social status. Plus, you can get turn–by–turn directions from Google Maps, and the 3.2mp camera/video captures your most memorable moments. $99.99 with a
2-year contract and $100 online discount
“The battle for the Android high end is well-entrenched, and it’s becoming a bloodier battle nearly every day; the huge middle ground, though, is seemingly wide open. Staying shy of the magical $100 price point is key for a device in the category, and it’s a challenge that the Ally passes — but we couldn’t help but feel like we should still be able to expect more. Cheap doesn’t have to mean low quality.” - Engadget

Virgin Mobile
Blackberry Curve 8530
virginmobileusa.com
Virgin Mobile’s first smartphone! The 8350 is a slim phone, perfect for those who need to be connected to work, friends and family while on the go. It provides easy mobile access to e-mail, messaging, and popular social networking sites (including Facebook and MySpace), as well as features a highly tactile full-QWERTY keyboard for comfortable, accurate typing. You’ll be able to access BlackBerry App World to download applications from a broad and growing catalog of third-party mobile applications developed specifically for BlackBerry smartphones. $299.99 “This is currently the lowest price in the industry for unlimited data & text. With the high demand of 3G mobile web service, this deal is a game changer. Especially when you take into account that there’s no long term contracts and no extra hidden fees. I’m personally itching to get in on this deal…”

#dbest of social networking

On a typical day, I’ll visit Facebook a few times to check up on friends and family, upload photos to Flickr, listen to music on last.fm, read up on the latest movies (Flixster) and books (Goodreads), and find a good restaurant using Yelp. And don’t get me started on Twitter – that’s definitely my favorite tool out of the bunch!

Some people may think that social networking is a waste of time. While I agree that playing Farmville for hours on end is a total time suck, social networking websites can be used to:

  • Connect with old (and make new) friends.
  • Find people who share your same interests.
  • Communicate with your family, teachers, and co-workers.
  • Expand your knowledge base.
  • Share ideas with people far away.
  • Create brand awareness and monitor reputation, specifically for businesses.
  • Find a job!

There are literally hundreds of social networking websites across the Internet, big and small, with more popping up everyday. Below are some of my favorites! All free! What are yours?

Website/Description Buzz

#dbest of 3D technology

Apparently even wearing 3D glasses on the street is cool...

3D seems to be the latest craze.

From 3D HDTVs, projectors, and Blu-ray players, to computers and gaming consoles, the 3D experience doesn’t have to be limited to an IMAX theater anymore. However, only a handful of 3D movies are slated for release this year, and there aren’t any 3D TV channels at this time, so I’m not falling for it. Yet.

Don’t get me wrong, my husband and I love gadgets and new technology, especially when it’s related to television. We were the first on our block to get FIOS installed and bought an HDTV very early on. Then came HD DVD versus Blu-ray… and well, let’s just say we got burned.

It’s been several years, so I don’t recall exactly why, but we chose HD DVD. Maybe because the name made more sense, or because it was the first on the market. Either way, we definitely lost money, and that experience has left me a little hesitant to dive in headfirst into new technology the moment it’s released.

Back to 3D. Samsung seems to be leading the pack, with a variety of 3D TVs and a 3D-capable Blu-ray Disc Player already on the market. Plus, the company just announced a partnership with Avatar director James Cameron to promote its 3D TV products, so it looks like Samsung is well on its way to being the 3D “king of the world!”

Below are some of #dbest 3D products available at the moment.

You’ll also need to buy 3D glasses, of course, though I’m hoping most products will include them, since a single pair of glasses will set you back around $150… sigh. What do YOU think about this 3D frenzy?
